Gray Scott reaction-diffusion is solved on the surface of a sphere (in 2 dimensions) and has the values for its two main parameters (f and K) continuously mapped across the surface by a gradient that is animated to spin around the sphere. This has the effect of making the solitons in the sim (ie the stable dots) unstable in the bulged-out blue region. The simulation is run in houdini using a sopSolver, with post-processing of the resulting geometry to add the bulgey shape. Rendered using Mantra PBR (Physically Based Rendering) in SideFX Houdini Apprentice 12 on Gentoo Linux.
