Three-Dimensional Mid-Air Acoustic Manipulation

A team of three Japanese engineers from The University of Tokyo and the Nagoya Institute of Technology recently unveiled an ambitious device that uses sound waves to move objects through three dimensional space. It is known that an ultrasound standing wave is capable of suspending small particles at its sound pressure nodes and, so far, this method has been used to levitate lightweight particles, small creatures, and water droplets. The device uses ultrasonic speakers and is almost completely silent, using four arrays of speakers to make soundwaves that intersect at a focal point.
