There are some other really good ones on that site. I watched the half-pipe one about Shaun White. I am still very confused about the 3D rotations involved in those tricks and how they come up with 1260 degrees for instance as a label! Every roboticist should know that if you rotate 540 degrees around one axis jointly with 720 around another you can't just add them up to get the total rotation :)

Lovely writeup/vid/explanation.   Also suspect the warmer conditions help that style as well with better traction on the turns.

Last time I heard of a sportsman making a impact on style in any sport was the high jump and the frozby flop. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fosbury_Flop

Somewhat reminds me of the way race car drivers take a line through the turns (and which I practiced in my deranged younger  days). I wonder if Ligety is also a car-racing enthusiast.
