I'm not clear what is surprising about this... we've had lightening monitoring available in weather websites in the US for years.

Is the difference that this is a community provided project vs. university or weather service funded?

It works. I installed it. Shortly after the app installed there was a flash in the sky. Seconds after that my phone buzzed.
