Ported some of my old artificial chemistry C++ code from a desktop app to WebAssembly and Emscripten. That means that it runs just as fast as before but now runs on any browser. Very satisfying! https://timhutton.github.io/squirm3/

Wait, memories are formed by retrotransposons? This is staggeringly huge news. It means the brain might be using gene regulatory networks for computation. It means that memories might be passed between people by viruses, like the common cold. Time to reread Darwins Radio. https://twitter.com/johncarlosbaez/status/952614182834204672

A great way to learn about reinforcement learning. I feel engaged by the way Agent Cranberry Fox reflects upon her triumphs and disasters. I know she’ll have a great day tomorrow. https://twitter.com/algoritmic/status/955483652015706113

As a parent, I try to be careful to criticize behavior, not identity - the difference between doing something bad and being a bad person. The idea is that the child then feels they can change. Your proposal hits at the same thing - to empathise with people who’ve made mistakes.

Outside of mathematics and dictatorships, truth is messy, because the process that makes it is organic. It is a self-righting mechanism, robust against the forces of manipulation. As impervious to weapons as fog.
