The phase diagram of manual car driving. It’s such a strange interface! The parameterisation is all wrong. The dials don’t tell you if you’re about to stall or if the engine is racing. You have to navigate the phase space by feeling the vibrations from the engine!

Above the balancing-on-the-hill line it doesn’t make any sense to have the handbrake off (because you’ll roll backwards). Below the line it doesn’t make any sense to have the handbrake on. But there’s nothing in the car that tells you whether you’re above the line or below it!

It seems like an odd coincidence that the rays arrive at the same time. Is the same true for a lens? Is there a shape that reflects/refracts parallel light rays to a focal point where the rays don’t arrive at the same time?

To answer my second question, there are plenty of shapes that bring light to a focus but with a time delay - e.g. a split parabola with y=x^2 and y=0.5x^2-0.25, as shown. I’ve no idea why you’d want such a thing since mostly this would cause motion blur, as you point out.

I wonder if space telescope arrays account for this, with a different synchronisation depending on where they are pointing.

It does seem that with lenses the light arrives at the same time. See the discussion here: https://physics.stackexchange.com/questions/455847/why-do-lens-convex-not-introduce-any-path-difference-to-light-incident-on-it

Presumably this type of split reflector would eliminate one particular frequency of light, since you’d get destructive interference where the extra distance on one side was exactly half a wavelength.
