Adding more space dimensions isn’t too hard - only the up-down dimension needs to be distorted in this constant-gravity setting.

Oh no. The Flat Earthers won’t be happy.

I’ve just realised that an inertial frame in a circular orbit around Earth is equivalent to travelling at a constant distance above a flat Earth in the absence of gravity. So maybe the Flat Earthers were right all along.

A rainbow is not a spectrum. I took this photo of a rainbow just now, where the repeated purple-green banding on the inside of the bow is very visible. A simulation on the furthest right shows the effect, which is caused by the multiple possible light paths within each droplet.

I find it rather beautiful that no matter how complicated a geodesic gets on a pseudosphere, it always unwraps to a straight line on the Klein disk model.

It’s curious that with hyperbolic geometry there’s a mapping that makes every geodesic into visually a straight line - but not with spherical geometry.

Over larger distances (20,000km) the gravitational field changes so much that we need a different approach. Here is a 3D embedding created by Rickard Jonsson in 2001. The free-fall trajectories are geodesics (“straight lines”) on the curved surface. https://timhutton.github.io/GravityIsNotAForce/variable_gravity.html

This shows what happens for an object launched with escape velocity. It soon reaches the near-cylindrical part of the surface and then continues on making a helix around it forever.

On the right is a new view where the camera is locked to the frame of reference of the object in free-fall. The object is moving in a straight line but the surface curvature brings it back to earth.
